صرح مسؤولون في الحكومة الامريكية ان البنتاجون يوفر الدعم العسكري والاستخباراتي والسفن لمساعدة القوات اليمنية في المواجهات القائمة ضد عناصر تنظيم القاعدة في اليمن.

واكد مسؤول بارز إن قوات العمليات الخاصة الأمريكية تقدم استشارات للقوات العربية في المنطقة، وأنها تعمل على مستوى المقر وليست قريبة من مناطق الصراع. وتحدث المسؤول شريطة عدم الكشف عن هويته لأنه غير مخول بمناقشة هذه القضية مع وسائل الإعلام.

أما الناطق باسم البنتاجون، الكابتن جيف ديفيز، قال إن واشنطن تقدم "دعما محدودا" للتحالف العربي والعمليات اليمنية داخل مدينة المكلا والمناطق المحيطة بها، ويشمل هذا الدعم التخطيط والمراقبة الجوية وجمع المعلومات الاستخباراتية والدعم الطبي وإعادة التزود بالوقود والاعتراض البحري.

ورفض ديفيز الحديث حول وجود قوات خاصة في اليمن، لكنه قال إن الولايات المتحدة أرسلت عدة سفن إلى المنطقة بينها سفينة الهجوم البرمائية يو إس إس بوكسر، ووحدة المارينز ال13، التي انضمت إلى المدمرتين يو إس إس غريفلي ويو إس إس غونزاليس، المتواجدتين أيضا في المنطقة.
وتابع ديفيز "استعادت القوات اليمنية ومقاتلو المقاومة الشعبية الذين تلقوا تدريبا ودعما من التحالف العربي مدينة المكلا، ولا تزال ماضية في حملتها ضد القاعدة في شبه جزيرة العرب شرق اليمن.
وأضاف: "لا يزال التنظيم مصدر تهديد كبير للولايات المتحدة وشركائنا في المنطقة ونرحب بهذا الجهد لطرد القاعدة من المكلا وباقي الأراضي اليمنية".
